I recently started a project with the North Ogden parks and recreation department to fundraise for three new adaptive swings in the local city parks playgrounds. I am still in the planning stages of gathering information, talking to those who have done this in the past and gathering support for the project. Fundraising should start soon! But over the last few weeks I have questioned why I am doing this specifically. Why do I care so much for these swings to be installed when my kids do not need them (but can you use them) and I don't know any individuals who will directly benefit from them?
The answer is quite simple. I believe that inclusion of all children especially in playgrounds should be the norm in our community; sadly it isn't. I believe that all kids should have a place to play where they and their parents feel safe, where they can feel included and befriended and they have the opportunity to grow and learn. While this is all a great ideal, I realized my city didn't really have any of the elements that make a great inclusive playground-a playground that all kids can play no matter their ability or age.
I also tried to pinpoint the reasons why I felt so drawn to this cause. A little girl I loved named Mia adopted from Romania, the special needs spotlights by This Little Miggy and the Saunders family are just some of the reasons why I feel so passionate about and lucky to fundraise for our local city parks.
Check back in the next couple weeks to find out more information on how you can help or come to one of our fundraising events.
