REVIEW OF MARRIOTT PARK, MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE, UT

1150 S 1200 W, Marriott-Slaterville, UT

This is a large wood chip based shaded playground in Marriott-Slaterville, located west of 12th street in Ogden (close to the Ogden Nature Center). This park has a large play structure, swings, covered picnic tables, basketball court, restrooms, a locked meeting house (opened by reservation) and a large grass field.

When you enter the parking lot the first thing you notice is the two signs on the chain link fence near the entrance. I (wrongly) assumed that you could not use the park without permission or play on the playground. After I called the number listed below I was informed that it is a public park and all are welcome. What they really mean is the picnic tables can be reserved and the club house is unlocked (and maybe the restrooms but that was unclear) with a reservation.

One thing I really like about this park is the huge grass area in front of the playground (set at the very back of the park) and the fact that the whole park is fenced in. To the right side of the park there is a dirt path that leads from the parking lot allowing wheelchair access to the restrooms and club house.

There is a covered pavilion with picnic tables, club house and attached restrooms. When we went on a weekday in May the bathrooms were locked.

The playground is wood chip based with a main play structure rated for kids 5-12 years old with 2 different slides, rock wall, stairs, clear dome, ways to climb up and a 4-5 foot fireman pole.

There are quite a few mature shade producing trees surrounding the playground and when we arrived around noon almost the entire playground was shaded.

I like that under the rock wall climber there is a spinning disk at ground height and a "dinosaur fossil" underneath.

Next to the play structure there are two separate swing bays. There is a VERY high bay with 4 regular swings and a rather short set of 6 toddler swings.

The regular swings are maybe 9-10 feet high and the toddler swings are only 5 feet high.

Next to the playground there is a shaded concrete basketball court.

Pros:

- large shaded playground rated for kids 5-12 yrs old set at the back of the park

- shaded basketball court

- large grass area

- park is fenced in with only openings at the front

Cons:

- confusing signs that may deter people from using park

- no concrete path that leads to the restrooms/club house. During muddy days it may be hard to get wheelchairs or strollers there.

- restrooms locked when we visited

- no wheelchair access on playground or inclusive elements
