REVIEW OF PIONEER ELEMENTARY, MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE

Pioneer Elementary School in Marriott-Slaterville is a school that teaches approximately 550 students in Weber County School District. It is located in a quiet neighborhood not far from 12th street. Currently it has 2 older playgrounds, one on each side of the school. I was told from a teacher at Pioneer that in the 2018-2019 school year they raised enough money to put in a brand new playground for the school and it should be installed before the start of the fall semester in 2019. It was not clear which playground will be taken down or added to.

The larger playground to the East of the school is a sand/gravel based playground with a larger blue and yellow play structure, parallel bars, monkey bars, and a separate older metal structure for younger kids.

My 3 and 5 year olds loved the smaller metal structure the best and were fascinated with the tiny slide and climbing circles. I would say this metal structure is rated for 2-5 years old but would still be fun for younger elementary kids.

Another great thing about this playground is the sturdy metal balance beam. Both my preschoolers spent a good amount of time practicing walking on this during our time here.

The main play structure was in rough shape with a broken slide that was blocked off with plexiglass and wood.

Near the play structures there is a large black top area with games and a large grass area.

2nd Playground:

The second playground looks to be a much older all metal playground with a metal frame, parallel bars and monkey bars. It is also on a sand/gravel base.

There is also some newer plastic stepping "stones". As you can see in the below picture this playground is almost fully fenced and is next to the parking lot and bus lanes.

Next to the metal structure there are poles set up like a volleyball court. There was no net when we visited during the summer, but I don't know if they have a net hung during the school year.

Pros:

- unique older metal play structures

- both playgrounds behind fences

- balance beam

- located in quiet neighborhood

- large parking lot

Cons:

-  no public restrooms

- no shade on playgrounds

- no wheelchair access on playgrounds

- broken slide on bigger play structure

Note: This is a public elementary school located within the Weber School District. These playgrounds are only allowed by public access during non-school hours, weekends and summers.
