HOW TO BEST REPORT DAMAGED PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT OR UNSAFE CONDITIONS AT A PARK
Wednesday, September 26, 2018
As parents and caregivers we always want the playground(s) our kids play on to be safe. Sometimes things get damaged and it may go unnoticed by our local cities until someone reports it. Here are a few ways to report damaged playground equipment or unsafe conditions at a park.
1.) Call the parks and recreation department of the city the park is located in. Sometimes they have an automated system and sometimes you have to talk to a person directly. This is the department that is in charge of maintaining the parks usually. A few hints to provide the greatest chance of getting it quickly resolved:
- Make sure you let them know which park the issue is at. Most cities have multiple parks and knowing the name of the park is crucial. If you don't know the name look it up on Playground Buddy or this blog.
- Be as specific as you can. Instead of just saying there is a broken sprinkler head in the park, let them know exactly where it is located for instance it is the sprinkler head closest to the swings on the North end of the playground.
- Take pictures of the broken or unsafe condition while you are at the park. A picture does equal a thousand words. Let them know in the message that you have pictures of the damage if they have questions.
2.) Visit the parks and recreation department in person. While they may have already received a few messages about this issue in the past, coming in person shows effort and tells them you really care about this.
3.) Email the director of the parks and recreation department for that city. Include your photos and how long the issue has been present at the park(s). If somehow the issues are not being handled properly by maintenance workers, the director may not even know of it.
4.) Call the Weber County Recreation department and ask them if they can help you.
5.) When in doubt, call again or come in to ask what the status is of the issue. Sometimes there are circumstances unbeknownst to you which make the issue harder to remedy. Sometimes persistence pays off.
