ADVOCACY- ADAPTIVE SWING INITIATIVE

At Weber County PLAYGROUNDS we believe that it is a right for all kids to have a safe and fun place to play at in their community, regardless of their physical ability. By installing adaptive swings in parks, we give children with special needs and children with low muscle tone at least one place to safely play on at our parks. We are telling the community that inclusiveness to all children matters.

Our goal is to see that every city in Weber County has at least two adaptive swings in their public parks by the end of 2019.

We hope to achieve this goal by:

-       Working with local city parks and recreation departments and city councils to find funds to install new adaptive swings in existing parks

-       Advocating for adaptive swings to be put into new playground plans

-       Fundraising for adaptive swings when funds are not available through the city governments

We would love your support in making this goal a reality for all the children in our community that will be directly impacted and benefit from this initiative.

Update 10/2020:

While we didn't meet our goal, here is what we did accomplish:

  • In October 2018 I met with the Parks Director of Ogden City (the largest city in Weber County). I suggested several different ways that they could make their city playgrounds more inclusive to people with disabilities, including the addition of adaptive swing

To our surprise and delight the city added 4 brand new adaptive swings to their park renovations and Ogden City installed the swings in September 2019. The new adaptive swings can be found in the Lorin Farr Park (769 Canyon Road Ogden, UT 84404), Bonneville Park (220 Monroe Boulevard Ogden UT 84404), Monroe Park (850 30th Street Ogden, UT 84401) and Mount Lewis Park (925 E 920 N, Ogden, UT 84404). They also added more sidewalks to their renovated parks to make them more more accessible.

  • In January 2019 we held a fundraiser at the Farr West Recreation Center and raised enough money to purchase and install one adaptive swing for the North Ogden Park (500 E 2750 N, North Ogden, UT 84414)
  • In June 2019 we held a second fundraiser at a bowling alley and raised enough money to purchase one adaptive swing for the Riverdale Park (4300 Parker Dr, Riverdale, UT 84405), one of the most popular parks in Weber County. It was installed in October 2019.
  • In September 2019 we reached out to an individual who showed interest in our swing initiative. This generous donor, Blake Cevering of North Ogden, sponsored our second swing for the city of North Ogden and it was placed in the Lomond View Park in March 2020.
